In 2009 the Exhibition will boast More Foreign Exhibitors than Ever Before

Although the global economic crisis has rocked also the international art market and during the year European and overseas art fairs with notable past were cancelled due to the recession, Budapest Art Fair will await the visitors in a smaller place and less exhibitors but at the same time will boast with more foreign galleries than ever before offering Hungarian and international works of art and world-famous artists and young, upcoming talents. In addition to the two galleries that were introduced successfully in the previous years, there will be five new foreign exhibitors in the program. The Tel-Aviv and London based Gilden’s Arts Gallery will be at the Budapest Art Fair for the fourth time. In addition to the world-famous Hungarian masters of the early 20th century such as Mihály Munkácsy, Béla Kádár, Hugó Schreiber and Antal Bíró, the gallery will also present a number of highly valued artworks: the richly coloured „Strandolók” (“Beach Scene”) by János Vaszary, two art-deco pieces from Gyula Batthyány, as well as the works of László Mednyánszky and István Csók from Dr. Leopold Ringwald’s famous collection. Attending the fair since 2005, the Galerie le Minotaure of Paris, who specialise in both modern and contemporary art, returns to the Hungarian capital with works of Kádár, Réth and Schreiber, this year featuring the monographic exhibition of the abstract painter Paul Kallos.

Focusing primarily in 19th and 20th century painters and also a debutant in the Budapest Art Fair, the Galerie Antoine Laurentin of France will introduce itself among others with the works of Alfréd Réth and Béla Czóbel.

With the Debut of Four Austrian Galleries, Austria will be this Year’s Honorary Guest of the Exhibition’

Representing young Austrian talents as well as international contemporary artists, the galleries of Vienna – including Galerie Ernst Hilger / hilger modern & contemporary, Galerie Steinek, Galerie Strickner, and Projektraum Viktor Bucher, beside the Knoll Gallery dealing with contemporary art, having an exhibition room both in Vienna and Budapest, being among the first private galleries opened in 1989 in the Hungarian capital – will be given a prominent location in the M?csarnok building.
Galerie Ernst Hilger, being instrumental in the development of the European art market for almost 40 years now, has acted as a role model in activities concerning the expansion towards new emerging markets and linking these with international companies, development of established art fairs. The gallery also helps young contemporaries by promoting their work through an international network of curators, collectors, and institutions.

One of the most important aspects of Galerie Steinek, founded 22 years ago in the centre of Vienna, is the permanent dialog between different generations of artists. The Halle and Showrooms Steinek, opened in 1990, are dedicated to private shows and more experimental exhibitions. During the art fair the gallery presents – among many others – the works of the Austrian artists Ilse Haider and Gudrun Kampl.

Galerie Strickner presents to Budapest Art Fair the works of Josef Adam Moser born in Innsbruck in 1952, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and currently living in Vienna and Tyrol. The artist, who will take part in the art fair, has been to Hungary several times. First he participated in Budapest Art Expo in 1998 and then his works were exhibited in the Art Museum of Gy?r city in 2000 and later in Szombathely in 2004.

Founded in 1995 the Projektraum Viktor Bucher is a meeting point for young strong, different, international emerging artistic tendencies & productions and sees its vocation in promoting, supporting and bringing contemporary art and artists to public attention. According to the statement of the gallery the ironic touch in the artistic approach makes art really fun. The gallery brings the artworks of Hadrien Dussoix, Zoé Byland, Sevda Chkoutova and Christian Eisenberger to Budapest.

Knoll Gallery Budapest, currently celebrating the 20th anniversary of its inception, its oeuvre being successful all along has organised significant exhibitions, symposiums and workshops in Hungary and in abroad together with cultural institutes and museums. Since its founding, the Gallery has also been present on the international art market: the gallery co-operates with Hungarian artists, such as Ákos Birkás, Luca Göbölyös and Csaba Nemes, as well as with internationally renowned foreign artists, such as AES+F, Blue Noses, Tony Cragg, Mara Mattuschka, Natalia Nikitin, Harald Hund and Paul Horn.

The Audience will see Outstanding Artworks also in the Offer of Hungarian Galleries

Kálmán Makláry Fine Arts will bring the works of Judit Reigl, Alfréd Réth, István Sándorfi, while the Erdész Gallery will exhibit a six-piece series by Moholy-Nagy made in 1922-23, which was one of the master’s first steps on his road to world fame and Joan Miró’s colour lithography entitled „Cantic del Sol” being the part of a thirty-three-piece set. The Belvedere Saloon will place in the focus the monumental artwork of Karl Kaufmann “Veduta of Venice” and the pastel of József Rippl-Rónai figuring the portrait of the famous painter „László Mednyánszky” from 1916. Visitors can meet with further two paintings of József Rippl-Rónai: the oil on cardboard painting, the “Portrait of an Elderly Lady” will be displayed at the Kieselbach Gallery, while the portrait of Lazarine, the wife of Rippl-Rónai will be exhibited at Viktor Menshikoff Fine Art.
The Faur Zsófi-Ráday Gallery will display the special kinetic artworks of the London-based young artist Bálint Bolygó, who was introduced in a solo-show at the Viennafair in 2009, too. This year Molnár Ani Gallery represents mainly two artists at Budapest Art Fair – Ágnes L?rincz, an acknowledged contemporary artist living in Berlin and Éva Martus, a young talent. The stand interlinks the two different worlds of the above artists: the versatile technique of both artists re-interprets the term of the traditional oil on canvas panel painting. The common feature of their works is irony and indirect criticism of the society.

The Várfok Gallery will present the hypnotic portraits and spheres made by Austrian artist Martin C. Herbst on special aluminium base, the works of Austrian painter Sebastian Weissenbacher that combine kitsch with irony, Ray Monde’s sensual paintings, as well as the frivolous, red-based works by the Paris-based but Hungarian born aatoth franyo, the works of László Mulasics, László feLugossy and El Kazovszkij, and the sometimes perplexing works of Zsuzsi Csiszér, Levente Herman and László Gy?rffy of the younger generation. One of the most spectacular novelties of the gallery is that the stand of Spiritusz Gallery will appear, as a “hall” of Várfok Gallery, independently pretty near to gallery, where the works of the youngest generation will be exhibited. An independent stand part will be inserted between the two separate stands to commemorate Endre Rozsda, an excellent artist who deceased ten years ago.

And Numerous Exciting and Entertaining Programs…

However, the art fair is not only for the collectors and the artists, it is also an excellent cultural or weekend program for the family: based on previous appointment, there will be guided tours for small groups in which art historians will help visitors find their own interpretation of the artworks. At the professional forum of Artmagazin entitled „Caution! Wet Paint – Contemporary Forgery”, the methods of counterfeiting contemporary artworks and the techniques to recognise forgeries will be discussed. After the panel discussion, those who are interested in the investigating methods in detail can also visit the stand of Tondo SP1 Kft. where they can get acquainted with the most advanced technology used for the analysis of suspicious works of art.

Visitors will also see a premiere made in cooperation with Várfok Galéria: on Thursday József Böjte’s documentary entitled “Transcendere – The Artist of Gesture, István Nádler” will be first presented at the Budapest Art Fair in the company of the artist. On Friday ”The Dean of Surrealism–Endre Rozsda”, a documentary about the artist who died ten years ago, will be presented at the Auditorium of M?csarnok.

Fans of the ninth art i.e. comics are awaited to the Auditorium of M?csarnok at 11.00 a.m. on Sunday where a unique collection of graphics will be auctioned at the 5th Caricature and Comics Auction of kArton Gallery. The backbone of this year’s auctioning material will be Hungarian graphics. Besides the works of well-known 20th century caricature artists, visitors can also bid for the works of late 19th century masters, the comics of Ern? Zórád, Imre Seb?k’s virtuosically drawn, piquant female nudes, reprint posters from 1919, Sándor Lengyel’s advertising posters made during the 60s and 70s, as well as for the cartoon sketch drawings and animation cells of cartoon films from Hungary (Macskafogó) and abroad (Superman) which were a huge success last year.

And while parents are studying the masterpieces, children can also find an interesting activity on Saturday and Sunday at the artistic playhouse where they can paint, play with dough, draw comics and poster designs or even write a critical essay of the artworks just seen under the guidance of professionals. The handicraft workshop may be attended not only by children but also by their parents and by everybody who wants to become part of a creative process and a charity program. In 2009, within the framework of the cooperation between Budapest Art Fair and the Bátor Tábor (Courage Camp) Foundation – offering complex therapeutic recreation programs for children with cancer, diabetes, JRA or haemophilia and for their families – ‘courage-camp’ children will work together at the play-house of the Fair with the most famous contemporary artists including Zsuzsi Csiszér, László Karácsony, Gyula Várnai, Kati Verebics and András Wahorn. The works will be sold during silent auction or outside the auction immediately at a flash price. Bidding will be closed and the buyers will be announced at the end of the four-day event, in Sunday afternoon – the revenues from the auction are due to Bátor Tábor Foundation, which will spend the money in full on the organization of next year’s camps.
