Pre-Columbian Artifacts at New York’s 64th Annual WINTER ANTIQUES SHOW

NEW YORK – THROCKMORTON FINE ART (www.throckmorton-nyc.com) is presenting a curated selection of pre-Columbian artifacts at the 64th Annual Winter Antiques Show. This is the gallery’s 32nd year participating in the renowned New York show at the Park Avenue (67th Street) Armory — this year being staged from January 19 – January 28.

“The Winter Antiques Show attracts the most knowledgeable and enthusiastic collectors, scholars and museum officials,” says Spencer Throckmorton. “Only 70 of the world’s most respected antiques and art dealers are invited to exhibit, and many save their most important acquisitions for this event.”
Kraige Block, Executive Director of Throckmorton adds that, “The Winter Antiques Show’s reputation is for showing ‘the best of the best.’” Many of the museum-quality art and antiquities on offer have not been seen on the market for decades. The Pre-Columbian art we show has been carefully vetted to insure authenticity for the seasoned collectors and museum officials and patrons interested in Pre-Columbian masterworks.”

The Winter Antiques Show is an annual benefit for the East Side House Settlement, a community-based organization in the South Bronx. East Side House’s programs focus on education and technology as gateways out of poverty and as the keys to economic opportunity. All revenues from the show’s general admissions and the net proceeds from the Opening Night Party and other events go to East Side House and contribute substantially to its private philanthropic budget.

Of special interest this year at the Throckmorton stand are two Mayan works. One is an engraved Shell Pendant with Ear Flare Covers, three inches in diameter, dating to 550-950 CE. A second Mayan work is a hard stone Ruler/Shaman with Armadillo, 11 inches high, dating to 600-900 CE. A third work being offered is a Teotihuacan Ceremonial Mask made of hard stone between 250-450 CE, measuring 8.75 inches.

Those are just a few of the important Pre-Columbian sculptures visitors to the Throckmorton stand will enjoy.

Spencer Throckmorton has pursued a long-held interest in pre-Columbian art, Chinese jades, Asian sculpture and Latin American photography, staging gallery shows and producing a series of publications that have attracted the attention of both collectors and museum officials.

Demonstrating the gallery’s commitment to connoisseurship, Throckmorton has achieved sales to such major museums including The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Getty and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston along with the Reina Sofia in Madrid. Portions of collections the gallery was instrumental in forming have been donated to the Louvre. The gallery loans examples on a regular basis to such significant institutions as the National Gallery in London.

As the premier dealer offering extraordinary pre-Columbian art and vintage and contemporary Latin American photography, Throckmorton Fine Art participates in internationally acclaimed fairs, including The Winter Antiques Show, the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW, and exhibitions during Asia Week in New York.

Kraige Block currently serves as President of AIPAD and as a member of the Board of Directors.
