DETROIT – “Go, Speed Racer, Go,” the Toy Collector Magazine September 2007 cover story, has earned a prestigious Gold Award from the 17th annual International Automotive Media Awards. TCM writer Chuck Miller, author of the Speed Racer article, was on hand to accept his award, the first such honor for any Toy Collector Magazine article.
“I am deeply honored to receive this award,” said Miller, “because it demonstrates the quality of work produced by Toy Collector and its staff. It is amazing that our publication, in the span of only a year, could be honored by an organization as prestigious as the IAMA, in this case for a profile of a toy-related children’s racing cartoon series. Without the support of my editor, Catherine Saunders-Watson, art director Jim Bunte, and the publishing group’s CEO, Julian Ellison, this article might never have seen the light of day.”
The Speed Racer article featured interviews with the two surviving voice actors from the original 1967 cartoon, Peter Fernandez (voice of Speed Racer and Racer X) and Corinne Orr (voice of Trixie). The article also featured an interview with Jim Rocknowski, part of the ownership group who currently licenses the Speed Racer brand, and included information on the 2008 live-action film and an animated television revival of the series.
“To be honest, I am not surprised Chuck won this award,” said Saunders-Watson. “When I first read the manuscript, it really stood out. Its depth and detail were astonishing, and I’m accustomed to reading the work of top-notch writers every day of the week. Needless to say, all of us in the QM4G media group are enormously proud of Chuck for winning this award.”
“Go, Speed Racer, Go” earned IAMA honors in the “Internet-Entertainment” category of the IAMAs. Other Internet-based publications winning gold awards included Winding Road, Automedia.com and Edmunds.com.
The honor represents the second IAMA distinction won by Miller, who previously received a Silver Award in 2004 for a profile of C.W. McCall and his 1970’s trucker-lingo song, “Convoy.”
The International Automotive Media Awards are administered and produced by the International Society for Vehicle Preservation, and are part of a program to recognize and encourage excellence in all forms of automotive media.
