Geographicus Announces Lunar Map Acquisitions

Geographicus (www.geographicus.com), a dealer in rare and vintage maps, proudly announces the acquisition of a select group of rare lunar maps created to prepare for the Apollo 11 moon landing and that inspired Sci-Fi legend Arthur C. Clarke.

This group of three rare maps, prepared in 1961 by the U.S. Geological Survey for Apollo 11, each show the craters, seas, and mountains of the moon in breathtaking detail but varying aspect: the Physiographic Divisions of the Moon, The Lunary Ray Map of the Moon and The Photogeologic Map of the Moon. Each wall size map is 52” by 40” and in remarkable condition; they are the crown jewels of Geographicus’ Lunar and Celestial Collection, seen here.

The Lunar and Celestial Collection includes 19th century celestial maps that illustrate the wide variety of subjects and price points available. Geographicus proprietor Kevin Brown said vintage maps can also be a surprisingly affordable client, holiday or special occasion gift, with prices that are competitive with holiday gift baskets, fine desk accessories, or leather goods. “Our overall collection spans every price point from $100 to tens of thousands of dollars and everything in between,” said Brown. “My clients tell me there is no comparison for cachet, aesthetic and intellectual appeal, and decorative versatility of antique maps,” he said. “Unlike most genres of fine art and antique collectibles, authentic rare and antique maps are obtainable and affordable to almost anyone. In few other areas are authentic historic objects of such significance available at such an approachable price point,” he said.

Unlike other more traditional gifts, rare maps have investment value as well. ”Vintage maps more than hold their value, which can increase by 10 percent to 15 percent a year,” said Brown, who blogs about cartography at his corporate website and maintains an online archive for professional and amateur map enthusiasts.

This year, Brown has noted a recent uptick in inquiries from women looking for distinctive gifts for men. Other clients include astronomy buffs, recreational travelers, history fans, law firms, real estate companies, investment banks, interior decorators, and many others. “Authentic rare and antique maps appeal to anyone with an interest in history, an attachment to a special place or heritage, an interest in a specific era, or a love of travel, said Brown. “Antique maps can fit into any decorative scheme from minimalist to Victorian, primitive to modern; many companies find them an ideal retirement gift for senior management,” he said, “while parents find them an interesting way to develop an interest in their family heritage. The enormous diversity of rare cartographic material available means that a perfect antique map gift can be identified for nearly anyone.”

Among the offerings at Geographicus are rare maps of New York City, Boston, San Francisco, Washington D.C, and other major cities in the U.S. and worldwide; maps of countries on every continent, including Antarctica; and maritime maps (including an 18th century map of the Sandwich Islands rumored to have been drawn by William Bligh, of Mutiny on the Bounty fame, while he was stationed as midshipman on Captain Cook’s third voyage to the South Pacific).

Vintage maps can be purchased quickly and easily online at http://www.geographicus.com, with framing and shipping options available for one stop gifting; unframed maps can be shipped virtually overnight, making them an ideal and unique last-minute gift choice.
