Santa Clara Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo

A 102-year old U.S. gold coin designed by an acclaimed sculptor at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt and insured today for $5 million will be displayed during the first three days of the Santa Clara Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo to be held November 19 – 22, 2009. The show will be open to the public at the Santa Clara Convention Center, 5001 Great America Parkway.

Double EagleThe exhibit features the finest known 1907-dated “Ultra High Relief” Double Eagle gold coin, described by collectors and numismatic historians as America’s most beautiful coin.

“This famous gold piece was designed by renowned sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, at the personal request of President Teddy Roosevelt. The date, 1907, is in Roman numerals. There are less than 20 known surviving examples, and this is the finest,” said Ronald J. Gillio, Expo General Chairman.

“It’s called ‘Ultra High Relief’ because each coin was struck seven times to raise the design of the coin so high from the surface that you could not stack the coins one on top of the other. So, the U.S. Mint then had to lower the master design to strike coins for circulation. Many collectors say this is America’s most beautiful coin and one of the most beautiful coins ever struck anywhere in the world,” said Gillio.

The exhibit of the historic, multi-million dollar coin will be displayed courtesy of Certified Assets Management of Wilmington, Delaware.

More than 500 dealers will be buying and selling rare coins, paper money, stamps, vintage postcards, historical documents and other collectibles during the show. The Cupertino Coin Club will display exhibits, and there will be educational seminars on hobby topics.

A gold coin door prize will be awarded each day, and a children’s treasure hunt will be conducted between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 21. Teletrade of Irvine, California will conduct the official public auction during the Santa Clara Expo.
