Locati Auctions is proud to offer the public a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to buy photographs and related material from the estate of Lois C. Jennings. This auction is made up of approximately 100 lots. Mrs. Jennings was the daughter-in-law of the celebrated William Nicholson Jennings (1860-1946), an American pioneer in the field of photography. The auction gives the public a chance to buy rare photographs, negatives, and part of his personal equipment and documents. In addition, this auction includes many works by other photographers. Included is a work by the famed photographer Ansel Adams.
W.N. Jennings was both a scientist and photographer who made important strides in the area of scientific photography. He was the first person to take aerial photographs of lightning. W.N. Jennings won the prestigious John Price Wetherill Medal of the Franklin Institute in 1930. Jenning’s aerial images of street views, especially of new buildings in Philadelphia, appear to have been shot from the top of other buildings.
Included in the Auction are images taken at Fern Bank Camp in Roxboro, Pennsylvania of Jennings’ children, circa 1913. Jennings built the camp as a summer vacation spot and used only natural components in the structures he built there. These photos depict a bucolic getaway from the city. Jennings was a devoted family man and the content of these photographs, children playing in a natural setting, shows the attention that he paid them.
