Stamp dealer and publisher Stanley Gibbons announce their sale of one of the rarest stamps ever to come on the market; the1904 6d Pale Dull Purple (I.R. Official).
The stamp was recently on display on Stanley Gibbons’ exhibition stand at the London 2010 International Stamp Exhibition at The Business Design Centre in London where it drew crowds of collectors during the week long event.
Issued on 14 March 1904, the Edward VII 6d purple, overprinted I.R. Official, has earned the handle ‘Britain’s rarest stamp’ due to the fact that it was withdrawn almost immediately after issue. Only 19 sheets were ever printed (a tiny amount) and on withdrawal, almost all were destroyed.
