Inaugural Gentleman’s Library Sale at Bonhams New York

Bonhamsannounced the Inaugural Gentleman’s Library auction on November 17, 2010 in New York. The 300 lot sale will offer a diverse group of high quality works where the pursuit of leisure, pleasure, eccentricity and fun combine to rekindle the age of curiosity, comfort and nostalgia.

Now firmly established in the London auction calendar as a unique and diverse event, the inaugural New York sale features an array of traditional library furniture, including desks, writing tables, bookcases and related furnishings complimented by selected works of art and the unusual. Natural History items, marine and other models, sit alongside globes, desk accessories and curiosities, enhanced by a selection of related silver accessories. Smoking and drinking accoutrements are among the items of note as well as portraits, hunting scenes, rugs and carpets.

Gregg Dietrich, Sale Consultant, said: “We are pleased to see the addition of the Gentleman’s Library sale at Bonhams in the United States. New York is the ideal location to host the inaugural sale in this category.”

Featured highlights include a finely bound limited edition set of the works of Herman Melville (est. $12,000 – 18,000); four hand colored engravings of African cats and a tiger by Carl Brodtman, Germany, 1833 (est. $3,000 – 5,000); The Sportsman’s Library, comprised of The Chase, the Road, and the Turf, The Life of a Fox, The Sportsman in Ireland, Reminiscences of a Huntsman, Days and Nights of Salmon Fishing, with illustrated with hand-colored lithographs throughout (est. $300 – 500); a James Joyce Monument Study by Milton Elting Hebald (est. $1,200 – 1,800) and a 1950s terrestrial library globe (est. $700 – 1,000); as well as a robust selection of cufflinks, Fine Writing Instruments whisky and spirits.
