Linda Riddell Hoffman Collection Of Chinese Snuff Bottles And Fine Japanese Works Of Art for Bonhams Sale

Bonhams Chinese and Japanese departments will offer two sales on Tuesday, March 22, 2011, starting with The Linda Riddell Hoffman Collection of Chinese Snuff Bottles at 10am, followed by Fine Japanese Works of Art at 2pm. Both auctions will take place at the Bonhams saleroom located at 580 Madison Avenue at 56th Street.

Following on the success of the Margaret Polak Collection of Snuff Bottles last March, Bonhams will feature another single-owner sale this year, The Linda Riddell Hoffman Collection of Chinese Snuff Bottles. Amidst a total of 154 bottles, highlights include a large and rare carved yellow jade bottle, several inside painted bottles, a rare carved honey agate bottle, and an enameled glass bottle from the Imperial Palace workshops.

The Fine Japanese Works of Art sale will feature a selective group of Netsuke and Inro, following on the strengths of the sale of The Edward Wrangham Collection of Japanese Art, held in London last November. With nearly 250 lots, there is a strong section of paintings and screens, the core of which is made up from a group which comes to Bonhams from an American institution.

Jeff Olson, Specialist, Japanese Arts, said, ” The sale is well rounded this Spring and also consists of a fine group of modern items from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, including screens to be used during tea gatherings, decorative ornaments and design elements.” He adds, “There will also be a section dedicated to the arts of the Samurai, namely armors, some to be sold subject to no reserve, swords and sword-related items.”

Concurrently with the exhibition of The Linda Riddell Hoffman Collection of Chinese Snuff Bottles and Fine Japanese Works of Art, Bonhams will also be previewing the third installment of the George and Mary Bloch Collection of Snuff Bottles, to be sold in Hong Kong on May 26th.
