Fine European American Furniture and Decorative Arts to be Offered at San Francisco Sale

Bonhams & Butterfields December Fine European and American furniture & decorative arts auction will include several impressive collections including property of Dr. Don Van Derby and the late Don B. Liles whose historic 1887 San Francisco house was restored, furnished and published. Paintings, furniture, lighting fixtures and decorative arts from this historic house will be offered.

sacristy cabinetProperty from the private collection of Corinthian Studios’ owners Bob Kongsli and Vern Halcomb include an important Paul Sormani commode, a 16th century fountain, a rare Viennese clock, decorative arts and sculpture. During the second half of the 20th century Corinthian Studios of Saratoga, California was the premier destination for collectors of 19th French furniture, Tiffany works of art, silver and jewelry.

Americana is highlighted by several examples of Herter furniture from the Warner Bros. Studio collection, including two pieces from the Mark Hopkins residence on Nob Hill and four lots from Thurlow Lodge, Menlo Park. A pair of portraits by Thomas Cook Ruckle, suites of Meeks furniture and a rare cast iron stag will also be featured.

Garden ornaments include a superb set of 18th century statues of the four seasons and is highlighted by a rare and important suite of Venetian rosso di Verona 15th century Gothic window surrounds and a portal surround. A large offering of silver including examples by Tiffany, Shreve, Gorham and the Russian firm of Nicols and Plinke.

Highlights of the French section 17th – 19th century examples including a rare set of four large 18th century painted trompe l’oeil canvas panels and a fine 19th century gilt bronze and rock crystal figural chandelier. Italian and Continental a good 17th century Italian ivory inlaid ebonized commode, a pair of Neopolitan rococo commodini, an impressive early 18th century sacristy cabinet and several examples of Viennese, German and French porcelain.
