In honor of the 150th Anniversary of the Pony Express, The Nevada State Museum staff designed a unique raffle prize to celebrate this year’s coin show, held August 27-28, 2010. Raffle tickets are now on sale for the Grand Prize, a precious 20 ounce silver bar embedded with two one ounce .999 fine 150th Anniversary Pony Express medallions. Fabricated at Northwest Territorial Mint/Medallic Art and sponsored by John Etten of Heritage Collectibles, this unique, one-of-a-kind prize is valued at $1,500.
The Pony Express Silver Bar is on exhibit with the other raffle prizes in the Dema Guinn Concourse at the Nevada State Museum located at 600 N. Carson Street. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5, and can be purchased over the phone by calling 775-687-4810, ext. 237. Proceeds from the sale of the raffle tickets support education and exhibits at the Nevada State Museum. The Grand Prize drawing will take place at 3:00 pm on Saturday, August 28, 2010. Ticket holder need not be present to win.
Northwest Territorial Mint/Medallic Art Company is located in Dayton; the mint designs and creates die-struck coins, medallions, knives and related products of the highest quality and craftsmanship. The Nevada State Museum is honored to partner with the world famous Medallic Art Company, whose work in medals over the last century includes that of renowned sculptors James Earle Fraser (Indian Buffalo Nickel), Victor David Brenner (Lincoln Cent) and Augustus Saint-Gaudens (the “Double Eagle” coin).
The Carson City Mint Coin Show features the finest in coins and collectibles, food sales, gold panning, numismatic education and Coin Press No. 1 demonstrations. Other 2010 raffle prizes include: $1000 gift certificate to Northern Nevada Coin, donated by Silver Sponsor Northern Nevada Coin and an 1883 Carson City Silver Dollar, Vam 5 with GSA certificate of authenticity, donated by Sponsor Vams and More; valued at $300.
The Nevada State Museum actively engages people in understanding and celebrating Nevada’s natural and cultural heritage. Exhibits highlight the state’s history, geology, plants and animals, Native American cultural heritage, Historic Carson City Mint, a replica walk-through mine and ghost town. Current changing exhibits include Interwoven 2010: Visions of the Great Basin Basketmakers (through July 24), Slot Machines: The Fey Collection, and What Continues the Dream: Contemporary Arts and Crafts in the Powwow Tradition.
Due to mandatory state budget restrictions, the museum is closed Sunday – Tuesday, and open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Wednesday – Saturday. Please enter through the Dema Guinn Concourse.
