Skinner to Hold Auction of Fine Oriental Rugs and Carpets

Skinner, Inc. will host its semi-annual sale of Fine Oriental Rugs and Carpets on Saturday, October 23rd at noon in its Boston gallery. The auction will feature Serapi, Kerman, Tabriz, Ushak, Akstafa, Kuba, Bidjar, Sewan, Marasali, Seichor, Melas, Kelim, and Kazak examples, plus tribal weavings and textiles. More than 50 room-sized carpets will be up for bid with prices to meet every buyer’s budget.

Of the room-sized carpets up for bid, three from Northwest Persia are featured items of the sale: a Serapi from the last quarter 19th century is estimated at $25,000 to $30,000; another Serapi dated 1913 is set to sell between $40,000 to $50,000; and a Tabriz from the last quarter of the 19th century is estimated at $30,000 to $40,000. From the same region is a Bahkshaish carpet, 14 ft. X 11 ft., estimated at $12,000 to $15,000; a Bidjar set to sell between $5,000 to $7,000; and a Serapi , late 19th century, estimated at $10,000 to $12,000. From Southeast Persia is a fine Kerman silk pictorial rug estimated at $12,000 to $15,000.

Out of Anatolia from the Southwest is a Melas prayer rug from the second half of the 19th century, estimated at $2,000 to $2,500, and from the West an Ushak carpet, 14 ft. X 10 ft., estimated at $8,000 to $12,000, coming from the collection of the Roma W. Leland Trust, Washington Court House, Ohio.

East Caucasus weavings are represented with a Marasali prayer rug, also from the Leland Trust, estimated at $4,000 to $6,000, and an Akstafa prayer rug going for $3,500 to $4,500. From the Southwest is a Sewan Kazak estimated at $7,000 to $9,000 and a Fachralo Kazak estimated at $5,000 to $7,000. From the Northeast are two Kuba rugs one from the second half of the 19th century, estimated at $4,000 to $6,000 and the other from the third quarter 19th century and estimated at $5,000 to $7,000.

Previews for the auction will be held on Thursday, October 21st from 2 to 5 p.m., on Friday, October 22nd from 2 to 7 p.m., and on Saturday, October 23rd from 9 to 11 a.m. Illustrated catalog #2522B is available for $9, $11 by mail from the subscription department at 508-970-3240.
